Building self-confidence is a bit like starting your car engine. Though you may not know exactly how it works or what happens after you turn the ignition, you most certainly know if something isn’t working right. Much like when your engine won’t turn over, a lack of self-confidence can have dire consequences on your health. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to rev up your confidence, much like you can add pep to your vehicle by taking it to the auto shop.

1. Wear Clothes That Make You Feel Good

Ever noticed you carry your head a bit higher when you’re rocking a great outfit — and drag your feet when your attire is less than stellar? It’s no coincidence. Experts say you can boost your confidence when you wear bright clothing that fits your body well. Before you head anywhere, make sure your clothing accurately expresses your personality by choosing new items to add to your wardrobe that boosts your confidence.

2. Visualize Yourself as You Wish to Be

As Napoleon Hill once said, “What the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve.” Studies have shown that the brain can’t tell the difference between an actual memory and an imagined (visualized) one. In other words, when you imagine something vividly and attach emotion to it, your brain chemistry changes as though it was a real memory. It then lodges into your mind as something you’ve actually experienced. As such, not only will your feelings of insecurity decrease, but you’ll also have the confidence to persevere, because it’s something you’ve “already experienced.”

3. Move Your Body — Often

Getting exercise is one of the quickest ways to boost your self-confidence. And according to the American Psychological Association, moving your body can improve your mood and help reduce negative emotions, such as depression and anxiety. Extra points if you can maintain a commitment to exercising. Doing so is an accomplishment, and any accomplishment big or small is a huge win for self-efficacy.

4. Deliver Affirmations

If your best friend had a partner who told him repeatedly that he was ugly, stupid, undesirable or worthless, you’d likely tell him to ditch the partner. Yet, how often do you tell yourself those things? Unfortunately, our inner dialogue is often full of insults, and somehow we accept that as normal, as we tend to believe anything that we hear constantly.

To prevent feelings of negative self-thought, practice saying something you like or appreciate about yourself on a regular basis. To power up this mental trick, pose statements as questions. Our brains are biologically wired to answer questions, so rather than say, “I am so good at negotiating deals, ” ask yourself, “What makes me so good at negotiating deals?”

5. Focus on Impacting Others

When you focus outwardly instead of inwardly, it’s much easier to think in a more positive manner. Think of ways you can give back to your family, community and the world to help grow your self-esteem. Whether you’re a jack of all trades, master of one or a connoisseur of knowledge, a surefire way to reach the masses is through a group coaching program, especially like the type offered by a membership site business. Having one allows you to get your message out, build your reputation and truly make an impact on others. In other words, it does wonders to help boost your confidence and self-esteem.

Follow Your Inner Moonlight

Remember, wanting to be someone else is a waste of who you are. If you start doubting yourself, being aware of your own insecurity is a form of inoculation against it. Still having a hard time living life to the fullest? Then make sure to continue walking through these steps to give yourself a much-needed boost of self-esteem.
